We are delighted to present Idun Baltzersen\u2019s third solo exhibition at the gallery.\u00a0The Bathers<\/em>, a shell-shaped installation of a series of frame-mounted textile collages, meets the viewer in the first room. In the second room, the same motifs return in larger, more elaborate collages and painted woodcuts.

Idun Baltzersen has previously explored themes connected to identity and self-fashioning focusing on a young generation\u2019s relationship to each other and the contemporary world. The interest in these topics is still present, but Baltzersen is now shifting towards more timeless compositions. The imagery of the new works\u00a0reminiscence art history, with motifs of bathing people with the sea as a common backdrop.

The sea, in both its physical and mythical form, has interested generations of artists throughout history. As a symbol of the unexplored and untamed nature, beautiful and romantic as well as dramatic and terrifying. In the preparations for this exhibition, Baltzersen studied Swedish painter Eug\u00e8ne Jansson\u2019s and Edvard Munch\u2019s paintings depicting bathers from the early 20th century. The inspiration from Munch has been with Baltzersen from the beginning both thematically and technically, while Jansson is a recent acquaintance.

I\u2019ve been looking a lot at Eug\u00e8ne Jansson\u2019s paintings of bathers, especially the work\u00a0<\/em>Flottans badhus\u00a0(Naval Bathhouse) in the Munch-room at the Thiel Gallery in Stockholm. Jansson was a contemporary of Munch but worked in a more idealized way. I find it exciting how\u00a0<\/em>Flottans badhus\u00a0has gone from being an idealized representation of male bodies to a kind of queer icon. I have also studied Munch\u2019s paintings of swimmers underwater and thought about Anders Zorn\u2019s etchings of beautiful naked girls bathing in the archipelago. I like that they feel a bit forbidden and too folksy.<\/em>

Idun Baltzersen\u2019s artistic process is characterized by physical interaction with the materials where she seeks unexpected paths through experiments and new techniques. Mainly, she makes large-scale woodcuts that are printed by hand on fabric. The printed textile is cut into different segments and sewn together to form a collage and the wooden originals are processed further into three-dimensional paintings. In some of her later works, digital elements have been included in the process, where quick ink drawings are scanned and transferred to the fabric using an embroidery machine.

In the exhibition,\u00a0Baltzersen places greater emphasis on the painterly qualities and explores a diversity of artistic techniques and forms of expression. Apart from being visually captivating the work also invites the viewer to reflect on the darker aspects of our relationship with nature and the quest to master its powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Idun Baltzersen was born in 1987 in Trondheim, Norway. She was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen and Konstfack University of Arts in Stockholm. Since graduating in 2014, she has lived and worked in Stockholm. In recent years, she has had a large number of exhibitions at galleries and institutions, especially in Sweden and Norway. In 2014, she was awarded the Anna-Lisa Thomson Grant and an exhibition at Uppsala Art Museum, Sweden. The following year she was one of the recipients of the Fredrik Roos grant with an exhibition at Moderna Museet in Malm\u00f6, Sweden. In 2016 she received the Bernadotte grant from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, which involved a studio and exhibition in the building of the academy. Her work can be found in the collections of e.g. Moderna Museet, Sweden, Magasin III Museum for Contemporary Art, Stockholm, Sweden, British Museum,  Gothenburg Museum of Art, Sweden, Uppsala Art Museum, Sweden, Haugesund Billedgalleri, Norway and V\u00e4ster\u00e5s Art Museum, Sweden. During 2023 she has lived and worked in Paris through a grant from Cit\u00e9 Internationale des arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vi har gl\u00e4djen att presentera Idun Baltzersens tredje separatutst\u00e4llning p\u00e5 galleriet. I utst\u00e4llningens f\u00f6rsta rum visas verket Badarna<\/em>, som \u00e4r en sn\u00e4ckformad installation best\u00e5ende av en serie sammanfogade textila collage. I andra rummet \u00e5terkommer motivv\u00e4rlden i n\u00e5gra st\u00f6rre mer genomarbetade collage och bem\u00e5lade tr\u00e4snitt.
 
Idun Baltzersen har \u00e5terkommande utforskat teman kopplade till identitet och sj\u00e4lvframst\u00e4llning med fokus p\u00e5 unga m\u00e4nniskors f\u00f6rh\u00e5llande till varandra och en samtida v\u00e4rld. Intresset f\u00f6r dessa teman finns kvar, men hon r\u00f6r sig nu mot mer tidl\u00f6sa och konsthistoriskt pr\u00e4glade kompositioner. I utst\u00e4llningen \u00e5terkommer motiv med badande m\u00e4nniskor och kroppar med havet som fond.
 
Havet, i b\u00e5de sin fysiska och mytiska form, har intresserat konstn\u00e4rer i alla tider. En symbol f\u00f6r den outforskade och ot\u00e4mjda naturen. Vackert och romantiskt men ocks\u00e5 dramatiskt och skr\u00e4ckinjagande. I f\u00f6rberedelserna till utst\u00e4llningen studerade Baltzersen bland annat Eug\u00e8ne Janssons och Edvard Munchs m\u00e5lningar fr\u00e5n tidigt 1900-tal. Inspirationen fr\u00e5n Munch har funnits med fr\u00e5n b\u00f6rjan, b\u00e5de tematiskt och tekniskt, medan Jansson f\u00f6r Baltzersen \u00e4r en senare bekantskap.

Jag har tittat mycket p\u00e5 Eug\u00e8ne Janssons m\u00e5lningar av badare, speciellt <\/em>Flottans badhus som h\u00e4nger i Munchrummet p\u00e5 Thielska galleriet i Stockholm. Jansson var samtida med Munch, men arbetade mer idealiserat. Jag tycker det \u00e4r sp\u00e4nnande hur <\/em>Flottans badhus har g\u00e5tt fr\u00e5n att vara en idealiserad framst\u00e4llning av manskroppar till en slags queerikon. Jag har \u00e4ven studerat Munchs verk som avbildar simmare under vatten och t\u00e4nkt p\u00e5 Anders Zorns etsningar av vackra nakna flickor som badar i sk\u00e4rg\u00e5rden. Jag tycker om att de k\u00e4nns lite f\u00f6rbjudna och alltf\u00f6r folkliga. <\/em>

Idun Baltzersens konstn\u00e4rliga process \u00e4r pr\u00e4glad av en fysisk interaktion med materialen. Med utg\u00e5ngspunkt i traditionella grafiska metoder s\u00f6ker hon ov\u00e4ntade v\u00e4gar genom experiment och nya tekniker. I grunden g\u00f6r hon storskaliga tr\u00e4snitt som trycks f\u00f6r hand p\u00e5 tyg. Den tryckta textilen klipps i delar och sys ihop till collage \u2013 tr\u00e4originalen bearbetas till tredimensionella m\u00e5lningar. I n\u00e5gra av hennes senare verk har digitala element inkluderats i skapandet, d\u00e4r snabba tuschteckningar scannats och broderats in i tyget med hj\u00e4lp av en broderimaskin. 
 
I utst\u00e4llningen Badarna<\/em> f\u00e5r det m\u00e5leriska allt st\u00f6rre utrymme och Baltzersen utforskar en m\u00e5ngfald av konstn\u00e4rliga tekniker och uttrycksformer. Det \u00e4r inte bara visuellt f\u00e4ngslande utan bjuder \u00e4ven in betraktaren till att reflektera \u00f6ver de m\u00f6rkare aspekterna av m\u00e4nniskans f\u00f6rh\u00e5llande till naturen och v\u00e5r str\u00e4van att bem\u00e4stra dess krafter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hon har de senaste \u00e5ren haft en stor m\u00e4ngd utst\u00e4llningar p\u00e5 gallerier och institutioner, framf\u00f6rallt i Sverige och Norge. 2014 tilldelades hon Anna-Lisa Thomsons stipendium och en utst\u00e4llning p\u00e5 Uppsala Konstmuseum. 2015 var hon en av Fredrik Roos-stipendiaterna som visades p\u00e5 Moderna Museet i Malm\u00f6. 2016 erh\u00f6ll hon Bernadotte-stipendiet fr\u00e5n Konstakademien som innebar en atelj\u00e9 under stipendie\u00e5ret och utst\u00e4llning i akademiens salar. Hennes verk finns i samlingarna hos bl.a. Moderna Museet, Magasin III Museum for Contemporary Art, British Museum, G\u00f6teborgs konstmuseum, Uppsala Konstmuseum, V\u00e4ster\u00e5s Konstmuseum och Haugesund billedgalleri, Norge. Under 2023 har hon bott och arbetat i Paris genom ett stipendium fr\u00e5n Cit\u00e9 Internationale des arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
